Retail Sales Up 2.6%

The volume in the quantity of sales bought and the value of the money spent on the High Streets of the UK increased by 2.6% year-on-year in both categories in February 2013 compared with February 2012. Computer and telecommunications equipment retailers, Internet retailers and department stores were responsible for largest contribution. The monthly comparison shows that the volume increased by 2.1% and the value increased by 1.8% in February compared with January. All major retail sectors increased but the largest contribution came from non-food retailers. The weekly spend across all retail sectors was £6.3bn compared with £6.1bn both in January and during the same period last year. Online sales accounted for 9.7% of all sales.
