The number of adults who access the Internet every day has more than doubled since records began in 2006 to 33m adults according to data from the ONS. About 87% of people aged between 16 and 24 use social networking sites in compared to 48% of all adults. More people (32%) are also using telephone and video calls over the Internet than on 2009 (16%) or 2007 (8%). Mobile phone access to the Internet has more than doubled between 2010 and 2012 from 24% to 51% with 32% of adults accessing the Internet by mobile phone every day.
Internet shopping is proving to be very conventient for British adults. Over 87% of the 25-34 age group bought goods or services online in 2012. An estimated 67% of adults bought online in 2012 from 53% in 2008. The over 65s are also buying online with an estimated 32% doubling the 2008 estimate fo 16%. There is a difference in the type of products bought online. More 35 to 44 year olds than 16 to 24 year olds buy holiday accomodation online, for example. Clothes or sports goods were the most popular with 42% of adults buying online especially with the 35 to 44 year old group. Women bought more cloths and sports goods, books and magazines while men favoured electronic equipment, video ganmes, films, software and hardware.
