Industrial Prices Fall For Tenth Month

The producer price index for August 2014 published by the ONS fell for the tenth consecutive month. The output index fell by 0.3% over the year to August compared with 0.1% to July. Factory gate prices fell by 0.1% between July and August 2014. Core factory gate prices (excl. more volatile sectors) increased by 0.9% in year to August compared with 0.8% to July.

Input prices for materials and fuels for processing fell by 7.2% to August compared with 7.5% in year to July. Total input prices fell by 0.6% between July and August compared with 1.7% between June and July.

Industrial Input Prices Continue To Fall

The index for factory gate prices for goods purchased by UK manufacturers rose by 0.2% in the year to June compared with a 0.5% rise to May. Input prices continue to fall. The monthly comparison shows that factory gate prices fell between May and June by 0.2% compared with 0.1% between April and May. Materials and fuels prices fell by 4.4% over the year to June compared with a fall of 3.8% to May. Between May and June input prices fell by 0.8% compared with an increase of 0.3% between April and May.

Increase In Factory Gate Prices In Europe In September

Industrial producer prices in Europe went up by 0.1% in both the euro area and the EU28 in September compared with August 2013 according to a statistical bulletin from Eurostat. Over the year to September 2013 industrial producer prices fell by 0.9% in the euro area and 0.5% in the EU28.

Prices in total industry excluding energy fell by 0.1% in both zones over the month. Energy prices increased by 0.5% in the euro area and by 0.4% in the EU28. Consumer durables increased by 0.1% in both zones and capital goods and non-durable consumer goods remained unchanged but intermediate goods fell by 0.1%.

Over the year, total industry prices excluding energy fell by 0.1% in the euro area and rose by 0.1% in the EU28. Energy prices decreased by 2.7% and 2.4% respectively. Intermediate goods fell by 1.5% in the euro area and 1.3% in the EU28 Capital goods increased by 0.6% and 0.7% respectively. Durables increased by 0.8% in the euro area and 0.5% in the EU28 and non-durables increased by 1.6% and 1.8% respectively.

Annual Increase Of 0.8% In Industrial Prices In EA

Industrial producer prices remained stable in the euro area in August 2013 according to a statistical release from Eurostat, compared with an increase of 0.2% in July. However, in the EU28 factory gate prices increased by 0.1% compared with an increase of 0.4% in July.

The annual comparison for August 2012 and 2013 shows that prices increased by 0.8% in the euro area over the year and in the EU28 by 0.3%.

Factory Gate Prices Up 1.6%

Factory gate prices increased by 1.6% in the year to August according to a bulletin from the ONS on the Producer Prices Index. This compares to a 2.1% rise in July. In the month between July and August factory gate prices increased 0.1% compared with 0.2% in the previous month. Core prices (PPI excluding volatile indices) rose 1% down from 1.1% last month.

Input prices increased by 2.8% in the year to August compared with 5.1% in the Year to July. The core input price index rose by 3.1% compared with 3.9% to July. Imported materials rose 2.1 down from 4.5%. Between July and August total input prices fell 0.2% compared with an increase of 1.2% between June and July. The core price index fell 2.6% from 0.% between June and July.

Factory Gate Prices Up 0.1%

The output price for goods bought by UK manufacturers increased by 2%. Factory gate prices rose 0.1% between May and June 2013. Core factory gate prices increased by 0.1%. The overall price of materials bought by UK manufacturers rose 4.2%. Total input prices increased 0.2% between May and June 2013.

Producer Prices Up By 0.2% In Euro Area

Industrial producer prices in the euro area increased by 0.2% in February 2013. In the EU27 the increase was 0.4% according to Eurostat. In January 2013 prices increased by 0.4% in both zones.

The monthly analysis shows prices in industry excluding the energy sector increased by 0.1% in both zones. Energy prices increased 0.4% and 1.3% respectively. Capital goods prices rose by 0.1% in the euro area and 0.2% in the EU27. Durables and non-durables both increased by 0.1% in both zones and intermediate goods remained stable.

The annual comparison shows that prices rose by 1.3% in both zones, excluding energy the increase was 1.2% in both zones. Energy prices rose by 1.6% and 1.4% respectively. Non-durables prices increased by 2.3% in the euro area and by 2.4% in the EU27 and in both zones capital goods increased by 0.8%, intermediate goods and durable goods prices increased by 0.7%.

Factory Gate Prices Up In Europe In January

The industrial producer price index for January 2013 rose by 0.6% compared with December 2012 in both the euro area and the EU27 according to a statistical bulletin from Eurostat. The annual comparison saw an increase of 1.9% in the euro area and 1.8% in the EU27 in January 2013 compared with January 2012.

Factory Gate Prices Down In Europe In November

Factory gate prices in both the euro area and the EU27 fell by 0.2% in November 2012 compared with October 2012 according to a statistical bulletin from Eurostat. November 2012 compared with November 2011 shows an increase of 2.1% in the euro area and 1.9% in the EU27.

While annual inflation in producer prices in November 2012 increased by 1.5% in both the euro area and the EU27, the monthly analysis shows that in November total industry inflation, excluding energy, fell by 0.1% in the euro area and remained stable in the EU27. Energy sector prices fell by 0.7% in the euro area and by 1.1% in the EU27.

In both zones, intermediate goods decreased by 0.2% in November and capital goods increased by 0.1%. Durable consumer goods increased by 0.1% in the euro area and remained stable in the EU27 and non-durable consumer goods increased by 0.1% in the euro area and 0.2% in the EU27.

Energy prices increased by 4.1% over the year in the euro area and 2.9% in the EU27. Durable consumer goods increased by 1.1% in both zones while non-durable consumer goods increased by 2.3% in the euro area and 2.6% in the EU27. Intermediate goods increased by 1.4% in the euro area and 1.2% in the EU27 and capital goods increased by 1% in the euro area and 0.9% in the EU27.

Factory Gate Prices Stable In October

The annual output price index for home sales of manufactured products rose by 2.5% the same as September 2012. The index excluding food, beverages and tobacco and petroleum was 1.4% compared with 1.2% in the previous three months. The total input price index increased 0.1% compared with a fall of 1% in September.

Producer Prices For October

The producer price index for October was published recently by the ONS. The survey suggests that in the year to October the factory gate prices for sales of manufactured products increased by 5.7%. The index excluding food, beverages and tobacco rose by 3.4%. Over the month between September and October the index remained unchanged. The input price index rose by 14.1% on the annual comparison and fell by 0.8% on the monthly comparison.

5% Increase In Factory Gate Prices

Output prices for home sales of manufactured products increased by 5% in year to March, from 4.2% last month and 0.9% between February and March. The increase mainly reflects the 24.8% increase in output price for petroleum products over the year. It is the highest increase since September 2008. Electrical and optical increased by 6.3% and chemicals by 4.5%. Excise duties did not contribute that much to the increase. The output price index excluding volatile priced products like food, beverages, tobacco and petroleum increased by 3.6% in the year and 0.7% in the month to March. The output price of petroleum products increased 3.9% over the month. The index for paper products is the lowest it has been since January 2006.

Input prices for materials and fuel for the manufacturing industries increased by 10.1% in the year and 3.6% in the month to March. The increases mainly reflect the 60% increase in price for crude oil and 14.4% increase in price for imported metals over the year. Imported materials as a whole increased 4.4% between February and March. If the more volatile categories are excluded the index increased 4% over the year and 1.1% in the month between February and March. The price of crude oil increased 9.7% in the month between February and March and imported metals 5.3%. It is the largest monthly rise since records began in February 1991.

The producer price index is important because because it provides a key inflation measure as important as the CPI or the RPI and works on a similar 'basket of goods' principle. The current data is from the statistical release from the Office for National Statistics for March 2010.

Factory Gate Prices Increase Again

Output prices rose overall by 3.8% in the year to January, compared with a 3.5% rise in the year to December. The index rose 0.4% between December and January mainly due to price rises in petrol products, tobacco and alcohol products and other manufactured products. Input prices for materials and fuels rose 8.4% in the year to January compared with 7.4% in the year to December and 2% between December 2009 and January 2010 compared with 0.6% between November and December 2009.

Over the year to January output prices increased in all catogories except textiles and clothing which decreased by o.2% The biggest increase was in petroleum products with 20.6%. Electrical and optical went up 4.3%, tobacco and alcohol by 3.7% and both transport and other products by 3.3%. The changes over the month to January saw decreases in the output prices of food at 0.1%, textiles and clothing at 1.2% and metal products at 0.1%. Petroleum products went up by 1.7% which was the biggest increase over the month.

Input prices were generally up with a 70.6% rise in the price of crude oil. Impiorted metals went up by 7.1%. A number of categories prices went down in January including fuel at 16.1%. Imported food materials prices decreased by 2.8%, home food materials prices decreased by 5.7% and other home produced materials by 0.7%. Over the month the price of crude oil increased by 5.3% and fuel by 3.1%. Home food products materials prices increased by 0.4% and imported food materials products by 0.3%.

Output And Input Prices Up In December

Output prices rose overall by 3.5% in the year to December, compared with a 2.9% rise in the year to November. The index rose 0.5% between November and December mainly due to price rises in food, electrical products, transport equipment and other manufactured products. Input prices for materials and fuels rose 6.9% in the year to December compared with 4% in the year to November and 0.1% between November and December 2009 comapred with a fall of 2.6% between November and December 2008.

Output prices rose across the board the most significant rise being in petroleum products at 16%. Other significant increases over the year were in transport at 4.2% and electrical and optical at 3.8%. In the month to December the changes were included increases in transport at 1.2%, electrical and optical at 1.1% and other products at 1.2%. There was a decrease of 0.2% in tobacco and alcohol.

Details of input price changes over the year to December show a 65.9% increase in crude oil prices, and a decrease of 18.7% in fuel prices. Imported metals went up by 5.8% and other imported materials by 4.3%. Other significant downward price changes were in home food materials by 5.6% and imported food materials by 2%. In the month to December the significant price changes were a downward change of 2.2% in crude oil prices. other changes included a 1.1% increase in the price of fuels, 1.2% increase in imported metals and 1% in the price of imported food materials.

Petroleum Prices Push Up Producer Prices

The producer prices statistics for November show that input prices for home sales of manufactured goods went up 2.9% in the year to November (1.9% in October) and 0.2% in the month between October and November (0.9% same period 2008). Input prices for the manufacturing industry went up 4% over the year to November (0.4% in October) and 0.1% in the month between October and November (3.3% same period 2008).

The main contributions to the changes in the output price index over the year were petroleum products, tobacco and alcohol. Over the last month to November the main contributions were from petroleum products and food. The biggest contribution to the change in the input prices was from crude oil with a 30.3% rise in price, the largest annual rise since the 45.4% rise in September 2008, and imported parts ands equipment. Crude oil and fuel were the main contributors to the change in the index over the month.

Factory Gate Prices Up In October

Overall output prices rose by 1.7% in the year to October according to the producer price index (PPI) published by the ONS. There was a rise of 0.2% in the month to October mainly due to price rises in alcohol and tobacco, transport, petroleum products and electricals. Computers and other information processing equipment had an significant effect up by 9.2%. Food, chemicals and other manufactured goods were the only sectors not to show a rise in the month.

Input prices also rose by 0.1% in the year to October and by 2.6% in the month. These compare with falls of 6.2% and 3.9% respectivly for September. The rise in input prices reflects price rises in crude oil, 6.8% and also fuels, 4.4% (but a fall of 11.3% in the year) and other imported parts and equipment. Home produced food was the only sector not to show a rise in the month to October.

Producer Prices Increase 0.4%

Output prices of manufactured products increased by 0.4% in the year to September compared to August when they fell by 0.3%. Prices increased over the month between August and September by 0.5%. The changes reflect increases in the prices of petroleum products of 2% and changes in duty on petroleum products which is estimated to have added 0.2% to the output index. Unleaded petrol is reported to have increased by 2.6% between August and September but decreased by 3.1% over the last year. Prices excluding excise duties fell by 0.6% over the year and increased by 0.4% on the month and excluding food, beverages, tobacco and petroleum increased by 1.4% over the year and 0.5% over the month.

Input prices for materials and fuels fell by 6.5% over the year to September and fell 0.5% over the month. It compares with a fall of 7.7% in the year to August. The manufacturing index fell 0.5% between August and September compared with 1.7% for the same time last year. The fall reflects the fall of 4.4% in the price of crude oil for the month and 24.1% over the year. Imported materials increased by 1% over the month to September offsetting the fall. The index excluding food, beverages, tobacco and petroleum fell by 1.7%.

Fall In Prices At Factory Gate In August

The 'factory gate' or output producer prices annual inflation for all manufactured goods for consumer sales fell 0.4% in August. These are the prices manufacturers sell their goods. Input price annual inflation, the price at which they buy their materials, fell 7.5% in August compared with 12.2% in July. Month on month output prices actually rose 0.2% in August and input prices rose 2.2%. The output index that leaves out the more volatile sectors like food, beverages, tobacco and petrol rose 0.7%. These index numbers reflect an increase in the price of crude oil and other imported materials of 1.6%.

Producer Price Inflation Down 1.2%

The output price index for home sales of manufactured products was down 1.2% in the year to June according to the ONS Producer Price Index bulletin. The ‘factory gate’ index reflects a fall in chemical prices of 3.0% between May and June partly offset by increases in petroleum products of 3.9%. Leaving out ‘volatile’ sectors, like food, beverages, tobacco and petroleum, the ‘narrow’ index increased 0.1%. Petroleum products actually fell by 19.9% over the year. Input prices for materials and fuels bought by the manufacturing industry fell 11.0% in the year to June but rose 1.5% in the month from May to June. The ‘narrow’ index fell 2.6%. The rise in the input index reflects mainly the change in the price of crude oil rising by 14.3% in May but falling by 36.8% over the year to June. The price of imports fell 0.3% between May and June.
