Output Increase Of 2.7%

There were increases in production output of 3.8% in manufacturing, 8.5% in water and waste management and 0.2% in mining and quarrying which contributed to the increase of 2.7% in total production output over the year between February 2013 and February 2014. Only electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning reported a decrease of 8.8% due it was thought to this year's warmer February.

The main manufacturing sectors that added to the increase over the year were rubber and plastic products, transport equipment and machinery.

Total production over the month between January and February 2014 increased by 0.9% mainly due to increases in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, transport equipment and food, drink and tobacco.

Industrial Output Increase Over Quarter

Industrial production output increased by 0.6% between Q2 and Q3 2013 according to a statistical bulletin from the ONS. The largest contribution to the overall figure came from manufacturing with an increase of 0.9% similar to that in Q2 2013.

Over the year production was 2.2% up in September 2013. The contribution of mining and quarrying was an increase in output of 11.5%, manufacturing a rise of 0.8%, a rise in water supply, sewerage and waste management of 7.1%. Electricity, gas, steam and air output fell by 3.4%.

The monthly comparison shows that production and manufacturing increased their output by 0.9% and 1.2% respectively between August and September 2013.

Production Down By 2.6%

Production fell by 2.6% over the year to September 2012. Manufacturing fell by 1% over the same period. On the monthly comparison production fell by 1.7% with mining and quarrying falling by 15.3% but manufacturing increased by 0.1%. The 2.6% fall in production is the 18th consecutive monthly fall on the same month a year ago (Data Source:ONS).

Manufacturing Up But Fall In Overall Production

The latest Index of Production (IOP), recently published by the ONS, fell by 1.0 per cent in August 2011 compared to August 2010. The Index of Manufacturing, within the IOP, rose by 1.5 per cent in August 2011 compared to August 2010. Production between July and August rose by 0.2 per cent, with manufacturing falling by 0.3 per cent. This months release was the first to be based on the new UK Standard Industrial Classification (SIC).

Sector C, the manufacturing sector, contributed the largest percentage of production with 66.6%. The 1.5% increase was due to a 4.8% increase in the production of food, beverages and tobacco. Over the month food, beveages and tobacco increased by 1% with alcoholic beverages contributing a 2.9% rise. Mining and quarrying (Sector B), contributed 16.4%. Sector D, electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning contributed 9.3%.

Production Index Down This Quarter

Production was down to 1.8% to 87.0 compared with the previous three months and down 12.3% on the year. Manufacturing output decreased by 1.2% , mining and quarrying by 2.7% and electricity, gas and water supply industries by 5.5% on the previous quarter according to the Office for National Statistics. The most significant falls in manufacturing were in basic metals and metal products, machinery and equipment and transport equipment industries. There were rises in food and drink and chemicals. Consumer durables and consumer non-durables were up, durables by 1.2% and non-durables by 1.7% on the last three months, both still down on a year ago. Over the last month durables increased output by 6.6% non-durables decreased by 0.9%. Both capital goods and intermediate goods and energy fell on the month, the quarter and the year. The production index has continued on a downward trend, with some fluctuations, since March 2008 when figures were new or started to be revised by the ONS.
