Workless Households 2012

The ONS has published a statistical bulletin on workless households in the UK. Glasgow and Liverpool had the highest percentages of workless households in thne country with 30.2% and 28.7% respectively. Glasgow and Liverpool have been in the top 5 workless areas for 9 consecutive years. Hull (27.6%), Birmingham (27.4%) and Wolverhampton (27.3%) weren't far behind in terms of percentages of workless households in 2012. The UK average was 18.1%.

The lowest percentages were concentrated in the South. Hampshire reported 10.6% of households were workless, North Northamptonshire 11.2%, Buckinghamshire 11.3%, West Sussex 11.3% and Surrey 11.4% were the 5 lowest.

The main reasons people in workless households gave for not working in 2012 were: sick/disabled 28%, unemployed 20%, retired early 18%, looking after family/home 16% and study 13%.
