ICT Adoption For e-Business Integration Is Slow

ICT applications were quickly taken up by European enterprises and are an integral part of what has become known as the e-economy. The extensive use of ICT and innovative and effective ways of accessing the Internet are important for running a business, sharing information and communication. The term e-economy includes both e-business and e-commerce.

The percentage of businesses with Internet access reached saturation level at 95% in 2012. The number of websites however can be expected to increase with 71% having a website. The gap between large and small businesses is in the advanced use of ICT rather than whether they have a website or not with 68% of small enterprises and 93% of large enterprises having a website but 18% and 68% respectively for enterprises using Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP). Many enterprises (40%) reported having difficulty recruiting ICT specialists. Very few actually succeeded (c.10%). There is little progress in areas like sharing information on purchase orders or supply chain management, operational customer relationship management (CRM) and analytic CRM.

There is a need for skilled specialists in ICT and skilled employees as the technological environment develops and enterprises become more proficient in their use of the Internet.
