European land use and cover survey results have been published for the first time by Eurostat. They are based on a large scale land survey called LUCAS, the Land Use/Cover frame Survey, carried out in 2009. Land was surveyed in 23 EU Member States recording both the physical land cover and visible socio-economic use.
Over 40% of land is used for agriculture with crops occupying nearly a quarter and grassland a fifth. Almost 30% is used for forestry. Just over 10% used for residential, commercial and industrial purposes. Built up and other artificial area like roads and railways account for 4%. The socio-economic uses largely reflect the physical land cover.
