Bad Harvest Puts Crop Products Up 28%

The latest agricultural price index for all agricultural outputs for January 2013 rose by 0.3% and stands 11.9% higher than last year. The index for inputs fell by 0.1% in January and is 6.5% up on January last year.

The prices are higher this year because of a bad harvest in 2012 which pushed potato prices to double their price since January last year and cereals prices have increased by 33%. All crop products are up 28%. The harvest also influenced input prices. Wet conditions produced poor quality forage and increased demand for winter wheat and the increased cereal prices have had an effect on animal feed pushing it up by 20%. There has also been a shortage of some seed due to the wet harvest conditions and seed prices are up 18% as a result compared with last year.
