We have a natural desire for happiness. The basic proposition is articulated in different ways. In our human existence we are confronted with choices. An opposition may be set up in which we are to make a choice. They can be mapped on a decision tree. It is often referred to in terms of the journey metaphor. We can look to providence and congratulate ourselves for the existing state of happiness.
Whatever we choose it is better not to take satisfaction in moral goods. It can lead to self deceit. In guarding against it we will be able to take more care in what we do and operate more efficiently. Prudence and humility will prevent boasting or complacency and help maintain the detachment called for in many cases. Penny pinching, wrong doing, tale telling, over-reaching, prevaricating may all give something in the short run, but not in the long run they take us in the wrong direction. The peoples of the world in many ways are coming closer together. It creates conditions to advocate and foster peace. Like a journey from the earthly city to the City of God.
We must be superior to our riches and not let them rule us. People can eventually get bored with all the eating and sleeping every day. Leaders ought to set an example but seldom do. Achievement and motivation are often put together but tend to leave questions about why we are doing this, here, with these people a little unanswered. It may not be obvious but it may be better to reflect and listen until we can see.
